celebrating 200 years of ministry

1818 - 2018

Halbert’s Tavern was one to the hot spots of the village of Tuscaloosa in 1818. Truthfully, Halbert’s was the meeting place, a hotel as well as the tavern. When a 24 year old circuit-riding preacher, Ebenezer Hearn rode into town, Halbert’s was the place where he preached the first Methodist sermon in Tuscaloosa. He writes of his own stuttering problem as he preached. But he connected with the people and that began our church.
